It is with a heavy heart that I address the devastating incident that occurred yesterday at 345 Park Avenue in Manhattan. A tragic act of violence unfolded as a lone gunman senselessly opened fire, wounding and killing innocent individuals before taking his own life.

In moments like these, we grieve as a city. We mourn the lives lost, the trauma inflicted, and the families forever changed. We struggle to comprehend why such darkness visits our communities, and we are left searching not only for answers—but for meaning.

When the shock begins to settle, and as the facts surrounding Shane Tamura’s horrific actions come to light, we must come together—not only to mourn but to act. We owe it to the victims, their families, and every New Yorker to understand how and why this happened—and to prevent it from happening again.

To off-duty NYPD officer Didarul Islam, whose courage in the face of chaos is a reminder of the bravery our officers show each day—thank you. Your actions represent the best of our city in its darkest hour.

My thoughts and prayers are with all the victims, their loved ones, and every New Yorker shaken by this tragedy. We will remember. We will reflect. And together, we will rise.
