I Have Accepted the NY1 Public Advocate Debate — Will Jumaane Williams Do the Same?

Public Advocate Debate: Gonzalo Duran vs Jumaane Williams

Over the weekend, I proudly accepted the invitation to participate in the NY1 Spectrum News Public Advocate Debate. I want to thank NY1 for their leadership and initiative in organizing this debate independently — without the oversight or limitations of Campaign Finance Board regulations. That takes integrity and courage.

Now, the question remains — will Jumaane Williams show up?

Sadly, history tells us that incumbents often don’t. It has become rare to see sitting officials debate their challengers or engage with the people they claim to represent. For decades, New York City has been dominated by one political ideology, and the result has been complacency, imbalance, and a lack of accountability.

This is one of the greatest failures in our democracy — elected officials who take the people’s money but refuse to face the people in open debate. Debate is not just a campaign formality; it is the foundation of democracy itself. It’s where ideas are tested, truths are revealed, and leadership is proven. Yet today, it has become a lost tradition — replaced by silence and scripted politics.

My goal in this debate is simple: to show New Yorkers that I have earned the right to serve as their next Public Advocate. I intend to prove that not all conservatives speak in rhetoric — many of us speak with reason, compassion, and common sense. We believe in accountability, balance, and opportunity for all.

Recently, The Bronx Journal named me “the face of Bronx Conservatism.” I wear that title with pride — but this debate is my opportunity to show that this movement is citywide. It’s not just about the Bronx — it’s about every New Yorker who’s been waiting for a voice that represents them.

As we enter the final stretch, I ask the people to stay vigilant and keep the pressure on NY1 to hold this debate. Power may try to interfere, but the people’s demand for accountability cannot be silenced.

And if Jumaane Williams refuses to participate, do not worry — my other opponent, Marty Dolan, a Democrat running on the independent Unity Party line, has already confirmed his attendance. The debate will go on — because the people deserve to be heard, and their voices will not be ignored.
