Mayor Bill de Blasio and I were recently interviewed by Italian media outlet LA7, where we discussed President Donald Trump’s policies on immigration, the working class, minority communities, and the role of the Democratic Party.
The interview opens with Mayor de Blasio addressing President Trump’s growing support among minority voters, a topic that has gained increased attention in recent years.
From the perspective of the Bronx, I spoke directly about both the borough’s long standing reputation for crime and poverty, as well as its overlooked strengths, including its cultural significance, economic potential, and community resilience. Speaking as Vice Chairman of the Bronx Conservative Party and a candidate for New York City Public Advocate, I provided insight grounded in my direct experience within the community.
Here is a translated version of Mayor de Blasio’s and my portion of the interview, presented with English subtitles. The full interview link is provided below.
According to the report, while official crime statistics may present one narrative, many residents described a different reality. During the interview, I emphasized that reduced police presence has contributed to crimes going unanswered and, in some cases, underreported, reflecting concerns I have heard directly from community members.
The segment also examined the broader impact of criminal justice policies, including bail reform and judicial decisions perceived as lenient toward repeat offenders. The report referenced Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg in the context of legal actions involving President Trump, framing it as part of a wider political and judicial discussion.
I addressed several key issues during the interview, including the increase in Hispanic support for President Trump and the factors driving that shift. I also spoke about ongoing crime challenges in my community, the effects of bail reform, and the issue of repeat offenders, drawing in part from direct conversations I have had with Mayor Eric Adams. I also addressed the consequences of current immigration policies and border management.
The interview offers an international perspective on how New York City politics, public safety, and national policy debates are being viewed abroad, while also highlighting my on-the-ground perspective from the Bronx.
