Public Advocate Debate: Gonzalo Duran vs Jumaane Williams

Over the weekend, I proudly accepted the invitation to participate in the NY1 Spectrum News Public Advocate Debate. I want to thank NY1 for its leadership in organizing this debate independently, without the oversight or limitations of Campaign Finance Board regulations. That kind of initiative reflects both integrity and a commitment to public discourse.

The question now is simple: will Jumaane Williams show up?

Too often, the answer is no. Incumbents rarely face their challengers in open debate, and even more rarely do they engage directly with the people they claim to represent. In a city that has been dominated by a single political ideology for decades, the result has been predictable: complacency, imbalance, and a lack of accountability.

This is one of the most serious failures in our democratic process. Elected officials accept the responsibility of office, yet too often avoid the responsibility of public debate. Debate is not a formality. It is a fundamental part of democracy. It is where ideas are tested, leadership is demonstrated, and the public is given the transparency it deserves. Today, that tradition has been replaced by silence and controlled messaging.

My purpose in this debate is clear: to show New Yorkers that I have earned the opportunity to serve as their next Public Advocate. I intend to demonstrate that conservatism in this city is not defined by rhetoric alone, but by reason, compassion, and practical solutions. We believe in accountability, balance, and opportunity.

Recently, The Bronx Journal referred to me as “the face of Bronx conservatism.” I accept that recognition with pride, but this moment goes beyond one borough. This debate is an opportunity to show that this movement exists across the entire city, representing New Yorkers who have been waiting to be heard.

As we enter the final stretch, I ask New Yorkers to remain engaged and to continue encouraging NY1 to hold this debate. Public accountability depends on public participation.

And if Jumaane Williams chooses not to appear, the NY1 Spectrum debate will move forward. My opponent, Marty Dolan, a Democrat running on the independent Unity Party line, has already confirmed his participation. The conversation will take place because the people deserve it.
